The guys at the PC repair shop told my dad, who in turn told me, that the disk got fried because it was underpowered. You see, I added a graphics card that turned out to be a power hog. My feeble 300W power supply couldn't handle all the hardware's power consumption. I had been planning to back up data and reformat it. Here's a list of data I had hoped to save but lost due to the said HDD failure: TV series: not much of a loss. They are easily reproducible. I'll just download them again through bittorrent.
